Re: Long Life

I have a couple of consumerist books on my shelves - "Car kung fu" and "Drive it forever" that maintain that it is possible to get extremely long life out of your automotive investments. There is, of course, the famous million-mile Mercedes, and a taxicab in Montreal that is shoo...

But where is the truth?

We've been told incessantly of late that we're at the "peak oil" point now. That the only way supply will move is downhill from now on, with the price going up accordingly. Whether or not that's good or bad news would seem to depend on who's right when it comes to global warming. Oil that ...

Re: Safety is no accident - or is it?

I dunno - the bad eye gene seems to be a variable - you don't see that many people under 40 who need glasses, and by then they have mostly done as much breeding at they are likely to do so the genes have been passed on anyway. That's certainly a tenable thesis in the parking lot of the No Frills whe...

Re: But where is the truth?

The terrorist mind is hard to fathom. The could kill as many people and have far less risk of detection simply walking up to the security queue in the airport and triggering the blast. But they go to extreme efforts to actually get on the planes, and then try to use weapons that so far have proven i...

Re: Safety is no accident - or is it?

Just be glad you don't live where I do, Sean - about two miles from the second busiest stretch of highway in the world (L.A. has one busier). Fourteen lanes crawling along bumper to bumper every rush hour.

Re: Seen on the road

I suspect that a personal message to lowdrag would bring you all the information you could possibly use - there may be someone who knows more about Jaguars, but it isn't very likely!

Safety is no accident - or is it?

Fist a woman walked out into the street, crossing with the green, and was mowed down and killed by a red light runner. Then someone walked into the side of a right-turning truck, another got run over by a bus, and yet another got run down by a streetcar. There were even one or two incidents where a ...

Re: Safety is no accident - or is it?

Take heart, Sean - in the case of two of the fatalities, the police actually stated that the vehicles had the right of way, and except for the red light runner, no charges have been laid. Of course it's hard to argue that a streetcar swerved and hit someone... There has also been a cosmetic blitz ti...

Re: But where is the truth?

The basic truth you need to consider is that wind power and solar power and geothermal power are right now hopelessly uneconomic. But there are many governments who want to push them, and as a result will offer all sorts of sweetheart deals and subsidies. So it's likely a dumb decision if you try it...

Re: The news.

I log ago came to the conclusion that "television news" is an oxymoron. I haven't turned on my tv since the Grey Cup back in November, and will turn it on for the first race in mid-March. On the other hand, I read the Star thoroughly every day. They try to do a good job of straight news re...

Re: Safety is no accident - or is it?

Yes, brain fade can hit anyone, anytime. Monday in our suburbs we had a 54 year old man pulled off a 400 series highway (like your Interstates) onto the exit ramp. Since the ramp is beside Canada's Wonderland amusement park, it's multilanes wide with a traffic light. He pulled off the ramp directly ...

A study in slanting

As this is written, Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland, is reportedly heading for the United States to have some heart surgery done Thursday. Canadians are mystified as to why he would go to the United States to have the work done. It has been revealed that the operation he needs is not availab...

Re: Bob Herbert On The Fate Of America

I can find a great deal of sympathy for Herbert's views; I'm just not so optimistic. A hugely interesting take on this line of though can be found at: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/201001/american-decline, and by the way echoes Herbert's view more than mine. One point the Atlantic article does make...

Re: Gays In The Military

Heavens, a breath of sanity. Wonder how long it will be before it takes hold in California? Here in the Great White North we have learned a different approach. Toronto has always had a vigorous and active gay community, centred in what is now colloquially Gaytown. This has had two effects. First, as...

No problem, Doppleganger. You may recall that I have been a little less prolific but I did add my frequent 2¢ worth to the discussions on carnuts.us, and to the extent that they have forums left where I might want to make a contribution I plan to continue to do so. I am concerned that too many peopl...
