Belgium: journey to the Spa

Up front, the story was familiar, straightforward and siimple. Formula One returned from the August break. Vettel was leading the championship, with Hamilton 14 points behind, as they entered the second half of the season. In qualifying, Vettel put in a truly heroic effort, establishing a new lap record, but Hamilton turned up his concentration to find that extra tenth of a second that put hm on the pointy end of the grid. Raikkonen, who had been setting the pace throughout practice for Ferrari till the team leaders got their last chance, also shaved his time and ended up behind Vettel, while gettng into a massive battle with Bottas for fourth. Max Verstappen edged his team leader by inches, as usual by inches as both are quite close in qualifying and results.

Hamilton got the jump t0 become engineer of the wo-car train that, barring pitstops, circulated at two seconds apart the length of the race. Current F1 regulations leave cars so efficient that while they may close up on a long straight and Spa effectively has nothing but, aerodynamic turbulence slows the following car down almost as effectively as the drag reduction system speeds it up. And so Hamilton and Vettel ran nose to tail to the finish.

Verstappen had a power train failure early on, while the two Force India drivers did some wheel-banging in the first lap then well into the race Perez tried an ill-advised pass, squeezing his teammate Ocon into the main-straigt wall, tearing his own rear tire apart while knocking Ocon's nosepiece off, littering the track with debris that brought out the safety car. Others took advantage of the delay to change tires, as this occurred in the appropriate time window but was especially propitious for Ricciardo who managed to jump his Red Bull up to a third place held to the finish. Other results were as seen below.
